Top New Year’s Resolutions for Baby Boomers

Are you ready to make the commitment to achieve your resolutions? As the start of a New Year it is the most popular time for which people are expected to make New Year’s resolutions for breaking old habits, getting healthier or making self improvements for wellness. What better time to make a change as the year ends and a new one starts, after all, we wouldn’t want to make resolutions in the middle of the year. Most of us think of the New Year as the best time to get a “new fresh start” as it marks a new beginning and a chance for a new you. A small percentage of us are very good at marking a date to start resolutions and sticking to it to see it through. Unfortunately for the majority, the proposed resolutions made in December are only dreams of commitments to be made in the future instead of now. Many people find it difficult to self inflict change as it reminds them of childhood when change was forced upon us rather than voluntarily. In general, people settle within their own comfortable lifestyle and rarely want change in their environment or create new milestones. Whether your New Year’s resolution is for adapting new good habits or dropping old bad habits, there is one thing in common for both, you have to want to make the change and realize the personal benefits from them. Resolutions for the New Year are no different than other every day of the year. If you are not in control of yourself now the simple change of the calendar won’t help you without your commitment. Most major changes in our lives start by force rather than us seeking new opportunities.

The baby boomers have always been trendsetters and have acquired a comfortable lifestyle accordingly, they know what they want and are not used to compromising. With that in mind, boomers may remember the hint of change from our parents but we usually go back to our own ways making it harder to keep some lifestyle resolutions. Here is a short list of the most popular New Year’s resolutions.

• Diet/weight loss- this is by far the #1 resolution by all generations. Boomers have done a good job in keeping themselves under control compared to younger generations.
• Fitness/exercise- everyone promises to exercise more but usually give it up within a couple of months from start.
• Quit smoking- many boomers have stopped smoking, there is still a percentage of people who know they should but feel if they quit they will only take other unhealthy vices.
• Drinking- this has the same promise as quitting smoking and sometimes go together. The famous boomer comments “I could quit smoking if I could quit drinking”. As a result most who feel this way never quit either one.
• Eat Healthier- any change you can make to better your eating habits are good. Keep your goals reachable and find new foods that you like as a substitute.
• Spend less/save- boomers try to convince themselves that they will settle for less and curtail spending. This usually lasts for about 3 months and then boomers feel it is time to reward themselves for the efforts of saving and splurge on another purchase.
• Organized- many wish they were more organized but don’t make the time to sort things out to organize.
• Enjoy Life and family - this should be natural. So many are unwilling to make the changes to better their lifestyle, they never fully enjoy what they have.
• Volunteering- another great thought. We think of ourselves as someone who cares, shares and wants to help others in need and our thoughts are in the right place. In reality, the efforts usually stop at the thought. If the rest of your life is unorganized and you have no time for your family you certainly won’t have time to volunteer.

• Whether it is resolutions or any goals in your life, only you can make it happen and sitting back wishing, hoping or waiting for years end won’t get results. Make a written plan of how to make the changes happen and variations to make if needed. Reward yourself in ways of fulfilling your resolutions to find satisfaction in changes they bring.

After many years of vacationing in Aruba and other islands, I have found Aruba to be one of the best places for relaxation, climate and total enjoyment.  The beautiful warm turquoise waters and white sand make Aruba one of the top ten beaches in the world. Being outside of the hurricane belt and its prevailing trade winds make this vacation island like a place in Paradise. This small island, approx 20 miles long and 6 miles at its widest point is 18 miles off the coast of Venezuela.

There are many activities for you to enjoy while on vacation in Aruba like – windsurfing, jet ski, water rides, tubing, water skiing, casino gambling, sailing, sunset sailing, golf, sightseeing, and numerous tourist attractions. The Aruban people are very friendly, pleasant and helpful which is why this island is so pleasant to visit. The people speak a minimum four different languages including English, and US currency is accepted throughout the island. Arubans main source of income is from tourism and they truly value your visit to their country and are genuinely sincere and honest. Arubans are very proud people and will always do the best they can to help to you enjoy your vacation stay.
